PETER CORRY – IRELAND’S GREATEST – THE VOICE OF IRELAND

Peter Corry has the kind of voice you never forget, the kind of voice that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and takes you on a musical roller coaster ride of emotion. Originally from Northern Ireland, Peter has travelled the globe with his unique sound and timeless classics. His astonishing talent spans the great musicals, opera, rock, jazz and the haunting melodies of his native Isle.

Peter began his career playing the euphonium and French horn in the Belfast Youth Orchestra. Destiny took charge at 26 when he went to see Miss Saigon in London’s West End. It was a pivotal moment in his life and he decided then and there that he was going to embark on a professional singing career. And so, as they say, a star was born.

Having performed as Dean Martin in Rat Pack starred in  Night of 1,000 Stars at the Royal Albert Hall and performed in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Peter’ musical gift was quickly recognised and he presented his own TV series, The Peter Corry Show with BBC Northern Ireland, singing alongside a plethora of international personalities. His passion for his subject has placed him in demand for numerous chat shows both in Ireland and the UK and he has hosted a daily music show for BBC Radio Ulster.

A superb vocal range complemented Peter’s casting in the opera productions of “Cosi fan tutte”, as Guglielmo, “The Marriage of Figaro” as Figaro and “The Beggars Opera” as Captain MacHeath.

Peter earned the title of Master of the Musicals when he spent three years in the formidable role of Inspector Javert, which he made his own in the West End, and then the UK tour of the Schonberg and Boubil’s hit, Les Miserables. His dream during those years was to take the music of Les Mis to the people of Northern Ireland and in 2001 internationally renowned producer, Cameron Macintosh gave permission for only the second time ever and entrusted Peter with the production of this major event in a concert version performed at Belfast’s, Odyssey Arena playing to over 15,000 people.

Following on from the sell out success of the initial Odyssey production and having had a taste of the challenge and satisfaction of producing a major musical extravaganza Peter’s company, The Musical Factory embarked on its biggest musical adventure to date. In October 2002 Peter brought One Enchanted Evening to delighted audiences once again at the magnificent Odyssey venue. A glittering array of stars from Broadway, the West End and beyond including Joanna Ampil, Barbara Dickson and Brian Kennedy shared the stage with Peter and a breathtaking choir of 850!

In between a gruelling performance schedule and Peter’s first love-his family, he has rewarded his large and loyal fan base with 7 memorable albums. His latest offering, ‘Sounds of the Soul’ released early in 2006 features a wide range of styles ranging from beautiful ballads like Gweedore and Shenandoah to well known opera favourites like Nella Fantasia and Caruso.

Peter has personally raised over a quarter of a million pounds with charity performances and his current ambition is to headline a company of young people in a musical set in the North of Ireland to take it around the world. For the Master of the Musicals, Anything Goes!.

This year, Peter featured in Washington on St. Patrick’s Day and did a one night performance at the MGM Grand Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas.

Peter was seen by millions on TV earlier this year, performing at the sad occasion of the funeral of George Best. In the Spring, he toured Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Holland.  He has had a number of sell-out concerts in the Republic of Ireland, appearing with the RTE Concert Orchestra. He appeared at Dublin’s Croke Park Stadium in early November, providing the mid-match entertainment to an audience of over 82,000 people.  During September/October he did an extensive tour of the UK and Northern Ireland and will return to Holland for the month of December.

Many workers at Austin and Pickersgill’s in the 1980s will remember him singing at the yard, where he worked as a plater.

His voice has left such an impression on the North East clubland that he has just been voted the best male vocalist in the region for the third time in succession.

Shaun picked up his top award last Thursday at a special event in Gateshead. He has performed at many clubs in the North East and regularly travels abroad to sing for holidaymakers in Spain.

Shaun prefers singing live with backing musicians and has made the popular ballads, from famous names such as Sinatra, Tom Jones and Al Martino – his speciality.

One of the biggest influences in his life, says Shaun, was his mother Kathleen, who died in December, 1999, at the age of 51.
