How, Where and Why

Johnnie Casson hails from Halifax, West Yorkshire, now living in Brighouse for tax reasons, as he will tell you.

He commenced his showbiz career as drummer with “The Cresters”, one of the country’s favourite comedy show groups. It wasn’t long before Johnnie took over the lead comic role, a role to which he was perfectly suited and one to which he was committed for the 21 years with the band. As well as touring with The Beatles, the band topped the bill in the then thriving cabaret clubs and found success on many television shows such as “Cliff Richard & Friends”

Whilst on holiday, his family persuaded him to enter a national talent contest. To his amazement, he not only won the heats, but also won the outright prize at The London Palladium. This encouraged him to leave the band and set off on the path as a solo performer. Television soon followed, an appearance on “Bobs Says Opportunity Knocks” prompted Bob Monkhouse to say, “Johnnie is one of the top four comedians in the country”.  A chance to take part in Granada TV’s remake of the historic “Comedians” show found Johnnie being featured on all 6 shows and was critically acclaimed as the find of the series.

Johnnie’s first appearance on ITV’s “Des O’Connor Tonight” was so succesful it was followed by a further 4 appearances. This continued on the daytime TV Des & Mel, with Johnnie being booked on 4 occassions.

Bruce Forsyth so enjoyed John’s act he asked for him to be a guest on his 70th birthday show which was broadcast live from the London Palladium. From this ITV asked Johnnie to appear in the series of “Sunday Night At the London Palladium”

PETER CORRY – IRELAND’S GREATEST – THE VOICE OF IRELAND

Peter Corry has the kind of voice you never forget, the kind of voice that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and takes you on a musical roller coaster ride of emotion. Originally from Northern Ireland, Peter has travelled the globe with his unique sound and timeless classics. His astonishing talent spans the great musicals, opera, rock, jazz and the haunting melodies of his native Isle.

Peter began his career playing the euphonium and French horn in the Belfast Youth Orchestra. Destiny took charge at 26 when he went to see Miss Saigon in London’s West End. It was a pivotal moment in his life and he decided then and there that he was going to embark on a professional singing career. And so, as they say, a star was born.

Having performed as Dean Martin in Rat Pack starred in  Night of 1,000 Stars at the Royal Albert Hall and performed in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Peter’ musical gift was quickly recognised and he presented his own TV series, The Peter Corry Show with BBC Northern Ireland, singing alongside a plethora of international personalities. His passion for his subject has placed him in demand for numerous chat shows both in Ireland and the UK and he has hosted a daily music show for BBC Radio Ulster.

A superb vocal range complemented Peter’s casting in the opera productions of “Cosi fan tutte”, as Guglielmo, “The Marriage of Figaro” as Figaro and “The Beggars Opera” as Captain MacHeath.

Peter earned the title of Master of the Musicals when he spent three years in the formidable role of Inspector Javert, which he made his own in the West End, and then the UK tour of the Schonberg and Boubil’s hit, Les Miserables. His dream during those years was to take the music of Les Mis to the people of Northern Ireland and in 2001 internationally renowned producer, Cameron Macintosh gave permission for only the second time ever and entrusted Peter with the production of this major event in a concert version performed at Belfast’s, Odyssey Arena playing to over 15,000 people.

Following on from the sell out success of the initial Odyssey production and having had a taste of the challenge and satisfaction of producing a major musical extravaganza Peter’s company, The Musical Factory embarked on its biggest musical adventure to date. In October 2002 Peter brought One Enchanted Evening to delighted audiences once again at the magnificent Odyssey venue. A glittering array of stars from Broadway, the West End and beyond including Joanna Ampil, Barbara Dickson and Brian Kennedy shared the stage with Peter and a breathtaking choir of 850!

In between a gruelling performance schedule and Peter’s first love-his family, he has rewarded his large and loyal fan base with 7 memorable albums. His latest offering, ‘Sounds of the Soul’ released early in 2006 features a wide range of styles ranging from beautiful ballads like Gweedore and Shenandoah to well known opera favourites like Nella Fantasia and Caruso.

Peter has personally raised over a quarter of a million pounds with charity performances and his current ambition is to headline a company of young people in a musical set in the North of Ireland to take it around the world. For the Master of the Musicals, Anything Goes!.

This year, Peter featured in Washington on St. Patrick’s Day and did a one night performance at the MGM Grand Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas.

Peter was seen by millions on TV earlier this year, performing at the sad occasion of the funeral of George Best. In the Spring, he toured Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Holland.  He has had a number of sell-out concerts in the Republic of Ireland, appearing with the RTE Concert Orchestra. He appeared at Dublin’s Croke Park Stadium in early November, providing the mid-match entertainment to an audience of over 82,000 people.  During September/October he did an extensive tour of the UK and Northern Ireland and will return to Holland for the month of December.

The lads haven’t always worked together; Darren was bitten by the music bug and travelled the World with his own band – Hitchcock Railway and The Kid – whilst Rob concentrated on his solo vocal/comedy show up and down the country.

The lads got together one night in 2000 at a charity event at The Bistro French in Preston, UK. Since that day HARPER have gone from strength to strength. After appearing at the Stage Showcall Showcase, the Stage newspaper wrote that the lads were ‘one of the highlights of the evening’.

The boys were next asked to perform at the legendary North Pier Theatre in Blackpool with Joe Longthorne and then, with their reputation growing and growing they toured with Joe Longthorne and supported one of Britain’s funny men, Freddie Starr. They also appeared on tour with their friend Johnny Casson.

The Harper Brothers’ diary is now getting fuller and fuller, regularly working for Pontins, Warners, Butlins, Park Resorts and Thompson Gold. They have even presented a TV pilot show called Bands In Transit. They have worked many times for P&O on their ships, The Oreana, Oceana, Aurora and Arcadia, as well as many overseas engagements.

In 2005 they burst onto the Panto scene, playing Smee and Starkey in Hammond Productions’ version of Peter Pan at The Victoria Theatre, Halifax and one of the highlights of their career was being asked to appear with Peter Kay at the Blackpool Opera House.

In 2006 there was a three-month UK tour of a comedy production called Funny Guys featuring Cannon and Ball, and the boys recorded an interview for the BBC programme called The Story of Light Entertainment. ITV also did a feature on the boys.

After 2006’s record breaking pantomime with Darren Day and Duggie Brown in Billingham Forum’s Jack and The Beanstalk, the boys were then asked ‘where they had been hiding their shining lights’ and were described as a revelation by The Stage for their performances as Captain and Mate at the Ashcroft Theatre Croydon in Duo’s production of Dick Whittington, with Lucy Benjamin and John Lyons.

2007 proved to be one of the busiest years yet. As well as working up and down the UK, and in Majorca, Ibiza and Cyprus for Thompson Gold, the lads are also working on Thompson Cruise Ships – The Destiny, Celebration and The Emerald.

2008 saw the Harper Brothers playing the Chinese Policemen in Aladdin – starring Deborah Stephenson – at the Ipswich Regents Theatre for Duo Productions, to great acclaim.

Many workers at Austin and Pickersgill’s in the 1980s will remember him singing at the yard, where he worked as a plater.

His voice has left such an impression on the North East clubland that he has just been voted the best male vocalist in the region for the third time in succession.

Shaun picked up his top award last Thursday at a special event in Gateshead. He has performed at many clubs in the North East and regularly travels abroad to sing for holidaymakers in Spain.

Shaun prefers singing live with backing musicians and has made the popular ballads, from famous names such as Sinatra, Tom Jones and Al Martino – his speciality.

One of the biggest influences in his life, says Shaun, was his mother Kathleen, who died in December, 1999, at the age of 51.

In the late sixties, he had two Number  One hits in South Africa ‘Little Arrows” and “Little Yellow Aeroplane”. Both were country slanted and ‘Little Arrows’, along with the album of the same name, with the song Good Morning. He completed two successful tours of South Africa.  One with Sandy Shaw, ad one with the New Seekers

As one of four artists along with Tom Jones, actually achieved No 1 in the American Billboard Country charts. He also reached No 24 Englebert Humperdinck, and Gilbert O’Sullivann in the renowned stable of the late Gordon Mills, Leapy began to enjoy the same champagne lifestyle as a result of this success as they did.  However, at the height of his fame, having returned from one of his successful tours of South Africa, Leapy’s career entered a dark downturn when, on a quiet Sunday afternoon, he was persuaded to go to the Red Lion in Sunningdale with the late Diana Dors husband, the troubled actor, Alan Lake, and became embroiled in a pub fight which ended up with a short spell at Her Majesty’s Pleasure.   In his biography part two, Leapy recalls the amazing event that took place on his arrival at the prison, when the vocal strains of “Little Arrows” rose over the prison walls.  News of his arrival had reached the ears of the other inmates and this was their welcome chorus!!   All this behind him, for several decades, Leapy has often worked voluntarily with young people who have got into similar troubles.

Still a household name in many countries with  a huge personality, Leapy, (Lee Graham) started his career at 15 when he formed his own “Urchins” skiffle group in his hometown of Eastbourne and before long was topping the bill at the Metropolitan Theatre. 

An acting career followed with  performances on the West End stage in “Johny The Priest”; “Sparrows Can’t Sing”, and “’Oh Dad, Poor Dad, I’ve Locked you’re Momma in the Cupboard and I’m So Sad” amongst others.

Since the late eighties, Leapy  has been wowing audiences nightly in Spain. Appearing in Cabaret at various hotels in Mallorca and the Spanish Mainland.   Occasionally he has returned to Germany, Holland, or the UK to appear in TV or , with a skiffle-to-sixties sing-along trip down memory lane which has audiences young and old joining in with gusto.

 In addition to his very popular cabaret act, Leapy has many other talents. 

He is a well known journalist and writes a weekly column for the Euro Weekly newspaper for which he has been voted ‘Journalist of the Year’ by the readers for his outspoken and uncensored views. 

He was also voted Balearics Capital Radio’s most popular radio presenter over a 10 years run.

He is a brilliant cook, and his travelling ‘Flying Curry Circus’, in which he cooks 3 varieties of curry for  100 guests and then sings and tell anecdotes to his customers is legendary on Mallorca. And makes hin a valable contributer to the TV Cooking shows.

His great personal charm and warm way with people also makes him an ideal celebrity performer to have on board ship or as a pantomime artist.

When he finds time to relax, Leapy heads for the river with a fishing rod and can of worms, and loves to spend time with his children.  He also enjoys his Charity work and for many years has supported the Robert Windsor Charity Golf Tournament which raises money for the needy children of Mallorca.
